If you want to see a betta fish baby, you have come to the right place. Thinking about breeding your own babies from home? You can do it, but be careful.
Breeding your own betta fish is possible, but it is different from breeding other aquarium fish. Do you know the dos and don’ts? Here are five our expert tips for breeding your own rumble fish.
1) Know your Male: The most important part of breeding bettas is to know the behavior patterns of your male betta fish. He can be difficult! Males have been known to attack its mating partner before she has a chance to lay her eggs. If his stripes are horizontal, or he puffs up his gills when she enters the tank, get her out of there!
2) Know your Female: The only part in the breeding ritual for the female is to produce the eggs. Once she has done this, get her out of the tank. Female fighting fish have been known to eat their own eggs after she has produced them.
If she goes for the eggs, the male will attack her. This will endanger her and the chances of you getting to see a betta fish baby in a few days.
3) Building the Bubble Nest: If your male fighting fish starts to build a bubble nest when it sees the female, you definitely know he is looking to mate. He will build it close to the surface of the water. If you have plants in the tank, he will probably build it near them if their tops are close to the surface. This is how he would do it in the wild.
4) Father Knows Best: It is the male betta fish that will care for your betta fish baby. He will maintain and repair the bubble nest during the two to three day incubation period. In less than two weeks the fry will be swimming on their own.
Some experts say that it is wise to remove the male when the babies are able to swim as he might attack them. Others maintain that if there is enough food in the tank, it is safe to leave him in there with the babies. It is left to your discretion at this point. Remember however not to over feed your rumble fish as this leads to most of their common diseases.
5) Watch Them Grow: You will be able to tell which of your babies are male or female sooner than you would think. The males are larger and always more striking to look at than the females.
The baby betta fish mature quickly. In three months, they will have reached sexual maturity. At this time, you can start the procedure all over again!
